Biography

Patrick Joseph Hoeppner was born in 1997 in Huntington, New York. He grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, and graduated with a B.A. in Creative Writing in 2019 from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Patrick began his writing career during his senior year of high school, when he wrote short horror stories for fun. His first official publication came in his high school newspaper, The Black and White. The story was called, “Engorge”, and it is about a high school rower who takes a supplement that has horrifying side effects. It was semi-autobiographical, as Patrick was at the time working to get recruited to row in college.

While at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Patrick found a community in his creative writing classes and came to love the creative process. He was a writer for the satire desk at UW’s Almanac between 2016 and 2018. One satirical article achieved 5,000 page hits in a short period of time, and it became the #3 Almanac article of all time. Ironically, some people reposted the article, believing that the article was real news.

Patrick has been a history enthusiast for his whole life. He came to love biography after reading Ron Chernow’s Titan. His forthcoming biography on the political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, will be his first published book.

Patrick resides in Belmont, Massachusetts. He enjoys sculling on the Charles River.
